Date back to

Tourist : Tell me about this gate.

Student : It's called "Shinmmon", which means "Holy Gate" or "Divine Gate." It's also called "Otenmon" or "Main Gate."

Tourist : A very impressive building. I suppose its style is rather old.

Student : Yes, it is. It dates back to the 8th century. As I understand it, there was a gate like this at the Palace at that time.

Tourist : Imagine that !

解説

Date back to ・・・にさかのぼる

Tourist : Tell me about this gate.

Student : It's called "Shinmmon", which means "Holy Gate" or "Divine Gate." It's also called "Otenmon" or "Main Gate." 「

Tourist : A very impressive building. I suppose its style is rather old.

Student : Yes, it is. It dates back to the 8th century. As I understand it, there was a gate like this at the Palace at that time.

as I understand it を使うのは as far as I understand it に似て、”自分のもっている理解の範囲内で述べると・・・”といったような意味です。最後の文を読むときは、 there was a gate / like this / at the Palace / at that time のような句切れがあると意識してください。

Tourist : Imagine that !

Just imagine! / Imagine it!

This custom dates back to the beginning of the tenth century.

Their feud dates back to their college days.

Dash out

Tourist : When the traind arrived at Kamakura, I jumped out of the train.

Masako : You were afraid that the doors would close up on you before you could get out, weren't you?

Tourist : That's right. It did happen to me before. Anyway in dashing out of the car, I forgot all about the bag on the rack. When I realized it, the train of course had already gone.

Masako : Did you report it to the sation master at Kamakura?

Tourist : When the traind arrived at Kamakura, I jumped out of the train.

Masako :You were afraid that the doors would close up on you before you could get out, weren't you?

My brother's death has been hard on the familiy.

Tourist : That's right. It did happen to me before. Anyway in dashing out of the car, I forgot all about the bag on the rack. When I realized it, the train of course had already gone.

Masako : Did you report it to the sation master at Kamakura?

Don't dash out. Walk out.

We dashed out and caught up with the thief.

I tried to dash out, and he rushed in. That's how we bumped into each other.

Day off

Mr. Pierce : I'm going.

Mrs. Pierce : Just a second. I want to tell you my schedule for the day.

Mr. Pierce : Your schedule?

Mrs. Pierce : Yes. This is my day off, remember?

Mr. Pierce : Oh, yes, please tell me.

Mrs. Pierce : I'll be at the beauty shop all morning, and I'll have my lunch at the club, and after that I'll be over at the Youngs'

Mr. Pierce : Maybe I'll join you at the club.

Mrs. Pierce : I was hoping you would say that.

解説

Day off 休日

Mr. Pierce : I'm going.

Mrs. Pierce : Just a second. I want to tell you my schedule for the day.

Just a minute というのもあります。

Mr. Pierce : Your schedule?

Mrs. Pierce : Yes. This is my day off, remember?

a day off / a week off / a month off / a year off などとも使えます。「私は休みだ I am off. 」なのに対し、「私は仕事中だ I am on duty. ここでの remember は命令形ではなく、Do you remember it?

Mr. Pierce : Oh, yes, please tell me.

Mrs. Pierce : I'll be at the beauty shop all morning, and I'll have my lunch at the club, and after that I'll be over at the Youngs'

「午前中(ずっと) all morning 」と「朝 early ( in the ) morning 」の区別をつけましょう。

一番おなじみの例は over here / over there でしょう。 I'll be at the Young's.

Mr. Pierce : Maybe I'll join you at the club.

Mrs. Pierce : I was hoping you would say that.

When is your day off?

What do you usualy do on your days off?

I did not take my last day off.

Depend on

Sachiko : In Japan the whole nation depends on the railroad. Trains must go through.

Steve : You work first and talk later. Is that it?

Linda : I think that's a wonderful idea.

Peter : We should adopt it.

Marian : We won't. Our congressmen love investigations.

Steve : There are two kinds of Congressmen ; those who want to start investigations and those who want to avoid them.

Sachiko : In Japan the whole nation depends on the railroad. Trains must go through.

Steve : You work first and talk later. Is that it?

Is that it?

Linda : I think that's a wonderful idea.

Peter : We should adopt it.

Marian : We won't. Our congressmen love investigations.

We won't adopt it.

Steve : There are two kinds of Congressmen ; those who want to start investigations and those who want to avoid them.

those who = the people who ( = the congressmen who )

応用

Don't depend on me too much.

Japan depends on foreign trade to make ends meet.

I cannot depend on him.

The difference

Father : What's that I hear?

Mother : Did you hear something unusual?

Father : It sounded like a puppy crying.

Mother : It is a puppy. Henry is downstairs with it.

Father : Tell him to come upstairs.

Henry : Yes, Dad. I saved this puppy.

Father : So I see. It's a mongrel, isn't it?

Henry : Is it? I don't know the difference. The man from the city pound was chasing it, and when it saw me, it jumped into my arms.

解説

The difference 相違

Father : What's that I hear?

Mother : Did you hear something unusual?

unusual は形容詞なので、不定代名詞 some/any/no/every -thing のうしろにつきます。

Father : It sounded like a puppy crying.

look/seem/feel などと同じです。

Mother : It is a puppy. Henry is downstairs with it.

upstairs/downstairs/downtown などは”場所をあらわす副詞”です。

Father : Tell him to come upstairs.

Henry : Yes, Dad. I saved this puppy.

Father : So I see. It's a mongrel, isn't it?

Henry : Is it? I don't know the difference. The man from the city pound was chasing it, and when it saw me, it jumped into my arms.

したがってこの文では the difference between a mongrel and a thoroughbred だったと考えられます。

I didn't know the difference between Washington State and Washingto City.

A doctor in the house

Mr. Goto : Good morning, Operator !

Hotel Operator : Good morning, Mr. Goto ! Why, you sound like a cold.

Mr. Goto : Yes, that's why I'm calling you. Is there a doctor in the house?

Hotel Operator : No, we don't have a doctor, but go down to the drugstore on the basement floor and speak to Mr. Goodman, the pharmacist.

Mr. Goto : Is the place open at this early hour?

Hotel Operator : It is Mr. Goto. Good luck.

解説

A doctor in the house

Mr. Goto : Good morning, Operator !

Hotel Operator : Good morning, Mr. Goto ! Why, you sound like a cold.

Mr. Goto : Yes, that's why I'm calling you. Is there a doctor in the house?

that's why/this is why That's because/This is because です。

Hotel Operator : No, we don't have a doctor, but go down to the drugstore on the basement floor and speak to Mr. Goodman, the pharmacist.

「 the first floor 1階」に対して「the basement floor 地階」があります。

Mr. Goto : Is the place open at this early hour?

Hotel Operator : It is Mr. Goto. Good luck.

It is とは The place is open のことです。

応用

Announcer at a ballpark : Attention please. This is an emergency. Is there a doctor in the house?

Do good buisiness

Mrs. Tucker : There is a store over there that's doing good business

Mrs. Takei : That's a fish store. It's always crowded at this hour.

Mrs. Tucker : There's something I couldn't understand, and I've been hoping you'd explain it to me.

Mrs. Takei : What is it?

Mrs. Tucker : Why does the Japanese housewife go out wearing her apron? Doesn't she want to look nice when she goes out?

Mrs. Takei : I'm sure she does, but why she keeps her apron on is something I haven't thought about.

解説

Do good business

Mrs. Tucker : There is a store over there that's doing good business

Mrs. Takei : That's a fish store. It's always crowded at this hour.

Mrs. Tucker : There's something I couldn't understand, and I've been hoping you'd explain it to me.

There's something (which)...

Mrs. Takei : What is it?

ではなく What is it? となります。

Mrs. Tucker : Why does the Japanese housewife go out wearing her apron? Doesn't she want to look nice when she goes out?

Mrs. Takei : I'm sure she does, but why she keeps her apron on is something I haven't thought about.

She does = She wants to look nice.

Yumiya and Kotoya are in the same kind of business. Yumiya is doing good business, but at Kotoya the business is very slow.

Since he changed business, Mr. Kamata is doing fine. I passed his store yesterday. It was doing good business.

Do wrong

Father : Jack, I want to talk to you.

Jack : Yes, Dad.

Father : Did you go out in the rain without an umbrella?

Jack : Yes, I did.

Father : You disobeyed Mother, didn't you?

Jack : Yes, I did.

Father : You have done wrong twice then. You disobeyed Mother, and you went out in the rain without an umbrella.

Mother : Please, Daddy, don't be too harsh.

Father : You keep out of this.

解説

Do wrong

Father : Jack, I want to talk to you.

Jack : Yes, Dad.

Father : Did you go out in the rain without an umbrella?

Jack : Yes, I did.

Father : You disobeyed Mother, didn't you?

Jack : Yes, I did. はい。

Father : You have done wrong twice then. You disobeyed Mother, and you went out in the rain without an umbrella.

Mother : Please, Daddy, don't be too harsh.

Father : You keep out of this.

Keep out of the grass 」にあるように keep out of ...

I'm sorry I did you wrong.

He admits that he has done wrong.

Do you get?

Fanny : Did you get what I said, Florence?

Florence : I'm sorry. I wasn't listening.

Fanny : I said tomorrow is my birthday.

解説

Do you get?

Fanny : Did you get what I said, Florence?

Florence : I'm sorry. I wasn't listening.

I didn't listen

Fanny : I said tomorrow is my birthday.

Done

Yoshiko : Here it is. This is omochi.

Anne : Oh, it's hard like a rock ! Are you going to cook it in the soup?

Yoshiko : Well, first we roast it.

Anne : Roast it?

Yoshiko : Watch. I'll put four pieces of omochi on the wire net over the charcoal fire.

Anne : Oh, look, look ! They are acting just like bubble gum !

Yoshiko : Now they are done.

解説

Is this steak done?

Yes. It's well-done.

Wait till this chapter is done.

Down

Mr. Peterson : Is Sachi ready to go?

Mrs. Peterson : I'll find out. Sachi ! Are you ready? Fred's here.

Mr. Peterson : Good evening, Fred. Come on in. She'll be down in a few minutes.

Mr. Peterson : Is Sachi ready to go?

Sachi goes. → Sachi is ready to go.

Mrs. Peterson : I'll find out. Sachi ! Are you ready? Fred's here.

Mr. Peterson : Good evening, Fred. Come on in. She'll be down in a few minutes.

さらに付け加えた in は in the room のことです。

Tell him I'll down in five minutes. 5

Drop a line

Mrs. Boothe : So you are leaving us !

Mrs. Dewey : Very reluctantly.

Mrs. Boothe : It's been wonderful knowing you. Drop us a line now and then, will you ?

Mrs. Dewey : I certainly will.

Mrs. Boothe : When are you taking off ?

Mrs. Dewey : Week from today.

解説

Drop a line

Mrs. Boothe : So you are leaving us !

Mrs. Dewey : Very reluctantly.

reluctantly は副詞で、「 I am going to leave you very reluctantly.

Mrs. Boothe : It's been wonderful knowing you. Drop us a line now and then, will you ?

Mrs. Dewey : I certainly will.

I will certainly dop you a line.

Mrs. Boothe : When are you taking off ?

Mrs. Dewey : Week from today. 1

I'll drop you a line when I get there.

Don't bother to call back. Drop me a line.

He broke our date, and all he did was to drop me a line.

Drop everything

Mrs. Pierce : Aren't you feeling well?

Mr. Pierce : I'm feeling fine.

Mrs. Pierce : Then why aren't you going to the office?

Mr. Pierce : Don't you know? This is a holiday.

Mrs. Pierce : Of course! I forgot all about it.

Mr. Pierce : It's such a fine day. Let's drop everything and go out.

Mrs. Pierce : Yes!

解説

Drop everything

Mrs. Pierce : Aren't you feeling well?

Mr. Pierce : I'm feeling fine.

Mrs. Pierce : Then why aren't you going to the office?

Mr. Pierce : Don't you know? This is a holiday.

Mrs. Pierce : Of course! I forgot all about it.

Mr. Pierce : It's such a fine day. Let's drop everything and go out.

It's a very fine day.

Mrs. Pierce : Yes! そうね

応用

Your father wants you right away. Drop everything and go to him.

come to me. があるように、 go to him.

When I heard the news, I dropped everything and hurried over.

Drop in

Mrs. Smith : Did you have a busy day at the office?

Mr. Smith : Yes, I did. Anything new at home?

Mrs. Smith : Yes, there's an airmail letter for you, and Mrs. Patterson dropped in in the afternoon.

Mrs. Smith : Did you have a busy day at the office?

have a nice day のように、「 have a 形容詞 day 」の使い方に慣れましょう。

Mr. Smith : Yes, I did. Anything new at home?

Was there anthing new at home?

Mrs. Smith : Yes, there's an airmail letter for you, and Mrs. Patterson dropped in in the afternoon.

You have an airmail / You have received an airmail / An airmail have arrived などを使わずにこの例文のように There is を使うのが無難です。

Let's drop in on the Fukudas.

通常、「 drop in on + 人」となります。

Let's call on the Myers.

A drop in the bucket

Mother : Where are you, Alice?

Alice : I'm in Daddy's study.

Mother : Are you busy?

Alice : Well, I'm writing a letter.

Mother : Oh, are you?

Alice : I'm sending money to the Red Cross.

Mother : What for?

Alice : I know my contribution will be a drop in the bucket, but I want to help the flood victims.

解説

A drop in the bucket

Mother : Where are you, Alice?

Alice : I'm in Daddy's study.

Mother : Are you busy?

Alice : Well, I'm writing a letter.

Mother : Oh, are you?

You are writing a letter, are you?

Alice : I'm sending money to the Red Cross.

Mother : What for?

What are you sending money for?

Alice : I know my contribution will be a drop in the bucket, but I want to help the flood victims.

a drop in the bucket の表現はこのように be動詞で直結して使われています。

Mr. Goto gave us one thousand yen, but for what we need, it was only a drop in the bucket .

for what we need
