On and off

Mr, Tanaka: How's Mrs. Irwin?

Mr. Irwin: Well, she's better, thanks, and how's Mrs. Tanaka?

Mr, Tanaka: She's all right, I guess, but she's been coughing on and off for a week.

解 説

On and off したりしなかったり

Mr, Tanaka: How's Mrs. Irwin?

How's Betty? とか How's Jane?

Mr. Irwin: Well, she's better, thanks, and how's Mrs. Tanaka?

Mr, Tanaka: She's all right, I guess, but she's been coughing on and off for a week.

I guess that she's all right.

On me

George : Let's order first. What will you have?

Mr. Goto: Before we order, I want one thing settled.

George : What's that?

Mr. Goto: This dinner is on me.

George : Don't be silly.

Mr. Goto: I don't care what you call me. Either you do as I say or I won't speak to you.

George : There you go. You are still the same old samurai I want to college with.

George : Let's order first. What will you have?

Mr. Goto: Before we order, I want one thing settled.

George : What's that?

Mr. Goto: This dinner is on me.

George: Don't be silly.

Mr. Goto: I don't care what you call me. Either you do as I say or I won't speak to you.

動詞 care は、ここでは否定形で<not care wh-/how SV...

A ( = you do as I say) も B (= I won't speak to you) も SV... 。

George : There you go. You are still the same old samurai I want to college with.

the same old samurai I went to college with the samurai.

The drinks are on me.

Is this on you?

The dinner is on the house tonight.

On the go

Mr. Goto : Does your husband travel a great deal?

Helen: Does he? He's always on the go.

解説

On the go 進行中

Mr. Goto : Does your husband travel a great deal?

副詞 a great deal が very much の代わりに使われています。

Helen: Does he? He's always on the go.

Does he? とは Does he (my husband) travel a great deal?

You are always on the go, aren't you?

He's on the go again. I wonder where he is headed for this time.

動詞句<be headed for O>は本来、「…

Aren't you on the go too much? Stop and relax for a change.

One by one

Cathy : I need money, Dad.

Dad: Do you?

Cathy : Give me about three thousand yen, will you?

Dad: That's a lot of money, Cathy.

Cathy : I know, but I have to get a lot of things.

Dad: Have you talked it over with your mother?

Cathy : Yes, I have, and she said to ask you.

Dad: I see. Let's see if you really need them all. Tell me what you want one by one.

解説

One by one

Cathy : I need money, Dad.

Dad: Do you?

これは Do you need money?

Cathy : Give me about three thousand yen, will you?

Dad: That's a lot of money, Cathy.

Cathy : I know, but I have to get a lot of things.

I know, but...

Dad: Have you talked it over with your mother?

Cathy : Yes, I have, and she said to ask you.

I have = I have talked it over with my mother.

Dad: I see. Let's see if you really need them all. Tell me what you want one by one.

Pick them up one by one. 1

I will listen to you one by one.

They disappeared one by one.

One good turn deserves another

Judy : I saw something very nice and interesting this afternoon.

Gene: What did you see?

Judy : I was riding on a bus. It was very crowded as usual. An elderly gentleman got on, and a young girl stood up and gave up her seat for him.

Gene: And?

Judy : The man offered to hold her heavy school bag on his lap, and she accepted it with a very lovely smile.

Gene: One good turn deserves another.

解説

One good turn deserves another 恩には恩をもって報いる

Judy : I saw something very nice and interesting this afternoon.

後置修飾は、<something/anything/nothing/everything + 形容詞>の場合にもおこります。

Gene: What did you see?

Judy : I was riding on a bus. It was very crowded as usual. An elderly gentleman got on, and a young girl stood up and gave up her seat for him.

Gene: And? それで。

Judy : The man offered to hold her heavy school bag on his lap, and she accepted it with a very lovely smile.

Gene: One good turn deserves another.

another = another good turn となります。

One at a time

Bob : I need money, too, Dad.

Dad: What do you need money for?

Bob : Our class is going out on a field trip, and I need new gloves, a wind-breaker, earmufflers, maybe a new pair of shoes, woolen socks, and ...

Dad: Just a minute, Son. I'm sure you have some of them.

Bob : They are all getting too small for me.

Dad: Perhaps so, but I don't think you need to buy them all at once. I'll talk it over with Mother and we'll try to get them for you one at a time.

解説

One at a time 一回に一個(一人)

Bob : I need money, too, Dad.

Dad: What do you need money for?

I need money for socks.

Bob : Our class is going out on a field trip, and I need new gloves, a wind-breaker, earmufflers, maybe a new pair of shoes, woolen socks, and ...

Dad: Just a minute, Son. I'm sure you have some of them.

I am sure (that) SV...

Bob : They are all getting too small for me.

Dad: Perhaps so, but I don't think you need to buy them all at once. I'll talk it over with Mother and we'll try to get them for you one at a time.

副詞句<all at once>と<one at a time>はセットでつかわれる傾向にあります。

Don't use them all at once. Use them one at a time.

Don't talk to me all at once. I will hear one at a time.

One of those things

Mr. Thomas comes home very late.

Mrs. Thomas : Is that you?

Mr. Thomas : Yes, it's me. Oh, I'm tired.

Mrs. Thomas :It's too bad that you had to go out to a drinking party after work.

Mr. Thomas : Well, it's one of those things. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When your Japanese colleagues have a reason for drinks, you have to go along.

Mrs. Thomas : Those hostesses I hear about must be one of the reasons.

Mr. Thomas : A waste of a lot of woman power, I'd say.

解 説

One of those things

Mr. Thomas comes home very late.

Mrs. Thomas : Is that you?

Mr. Thomas : Yes, it's me. Oh, I'm tired.

Mrs. Thomas :It's too bad that you had to go out to a drinking party after work.

これは構文、<It is 形容詞 that SV ...

Mr. Thomas : Well, it's one of those things. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When your Japanese colleagues have a reason for drinks, you have to go along.

有名なことわざ<When in Rome, do as the Romans do.>は2000年前の世界の最強国であったローマ帝国を舞台にしています。

have a reason for O

Mrs. Thomas : Those hostesses I hear about must be one of the reasons.

動詞句<hear about O>は「…

Mr. Thomas : A waste of a lot of woman power, I'd say.

I'd say = I would say

Over a cup of coffee

Mr. Aoki : It's a real pleasure to do business with you, Mr. Pierce.

Mr. Pierce: The feeling is mutual, Mr. Aoki.

Mr. Aoki : Let's go into that coffee corner and discuss it over a cup of coffee.

Mr. Pierce: A very good idea.

Mr. Aoki : Waiter, two cups of coffee, pleasure.

解説

Over a cup of coffee

Mr. Aoki : It's a real pleasure to do business with you, Mr. Pierce.

Mr. Pierce: The feeling is mutual, Mr. Aoki.

It's a real pleasure to do business with you, too.

Mr. Aoki : Let's go into that coffee corner and discuss it over a cup of coffee.

go to の代わりに go into が使われています。 副詞句 over a cup of coffee は、前置詞 over が during のような意味でつかわれています。

Mr. Pierce: A very good idea.

Mr. Aoki : Waiter, two cups of coffee, pleasure.

What were you two discussing over a cup of coffee?

Over one's head

Norman : Hello, Mother.

Mrs. Dewey: Oh, hello, Norman. Anything new at school today?

Norman : Yes. A man gave a talk.

Mrs. Dewey: Who?

Norman : Some famous scientist from the States.

Mrs. Dewey: What did he talk about?

Norman : I wish I could tell you. What he said was way over my head.

解説

Over one's head

Norman : Hello, Mother.

Mrs. Dewey: Oh, hello, Norman. Anything new at school today?

Was there anything new at school today?

Norman : Yes. A man gave a talk.

give a talk, give a speech, talk, speak

Mrs. Dewey: Who?

Norman : Some famous scientist from the States.

Mrs. Dewey: What did he talk about?

この答えは He talked about XXX. となります。

Norman : I wish I could tell you. What he said was way over my head.

I am sorry I cannot tell you.

Today's lecture was way over my head.

Over the weekend

Mr. Newman : I saw something rather extraordinary over the weekend, Miss Nagata.

Miss Nagata : What did you see, Mr. Newman?

Mr. Newman : On Saturday night I happened to pass through Shinjuku Station.

Miss Nagata : Oh, you saw the new Station Building.

Mr. Newman : It wasn't the new building that shocked me. It was the tremendous crowd of people with skiing equipment.

Miss Nagata : You saw the usual weekend exodus, people heading for white open country.

解説

Over the weekend 週末に

>が一般に使われますが、一方を否定にしてもう一方を肯定にするときは<It is not A that (S)V... but B >という形式を用います。

Miss Nagata : You saw the usual weekend exodus, people heading for white open country.

動詞<head for O>は「…

What are you going to do over the weekend?

What did you do over the weekend?

I want to finish this book over the weekend.

On the way back

Eveline : Are we in Nikko already?

Taro: Yes, we are.

Eveline : I see many souvenir shops. Can we go in the shops now?

Taro: Let's do that on the way back.

解説

On the way back 帰り道に

Eveline : Are we in Nikko already?

Are we already in Nikko?

Taro: Yes, we are.

Yesm we are already in Nikko.

Eveline : I see many souvenir shops. Can we go in the shops now?

Taro: Let's do that on the way back それは帰りにしようね。

do that = go in the shops on the/one's way back は副詞句で、定冠詞 the の代わりに所有格を使うこともあります。

応用

I'm going to drop in on George on my way back.

Please get a couple of magazines on you way back.

形容詞句 a couple of = many/two の意味があります。

We ran into a fire on the way back.

動詞句<run into O>は「…

On the whole

Mrs. Takei : I suppose that in your country the drivers are very courteous.

Mrs. Tucker: On the whole they are, but it's better to be careful anywhere, isn't it?

解説

On the whole 大体において

Mrs. Takei : I suppose that in your country the drivers are very courteous.

接続詞 that SV...

Mrs. Tucker: On the whole they are, but it's better to be careful anywhere, isn't it?

The play went very well on the whole.

The defense attorney was, on the whole, very brilliant.

Open for business

Sachiko : Hello, Fred? I hear you called me a while ago.

Fred: Yes, I did. The skating rink is going to open for business tomorrow. Will you go with me?

Sachiko : Skating? I can't skate, Fred.

解説

Open for business 開業する

Sachiko : Hello, Fred? I hear you called me a while ago.

Fred: Yes, I did. The skating rink is going to open for business tomorrow. Will you go with me?

Sachiko : Skating? I can't skate, Fred.

This store will open at 10 a.m.

Open for business during alterations.

Is the post office open at this hour? Yes, it is.

Out of this world

Doris : Is that a gate?

Taro: This is the famous Yomeimon Gate.

Doris : I've never seen anything like it before. Elaborate! Gorgeous! It's out of this world!

解説

Out of this world

Doris : Is that a gate?

Taro: This is the famous Yomeimon Gate.

Doris : I've never seen anything like it before. Elaborate! Gorgeous! It's out of this world!

前置詞 out of は、「…

Have you seen the new gym? Yes, It's out of this world.

They say the National Theater is really out of this world.

Be out of one's mind

Mrs. Butler : I wish the driver would slow down.

Mr. Butler: What's the matter?

Mrs. Butler : The driver must be out of his mind.

Mr. Butler: He's only trying to get us there as fast as possible.

Mrs. Butler : I'd rather get there late than dead.

Mr. Butler: Don't worry.

解説

Be out of one's mind

Mrs. Butler : I wish the driver would slow down.

<I wish + SV ...

Mr. Butler: What's the matter?

ここでの the matter とは the trouble/the problem/wrong のことです。

Mrs. Butler : The driver must be out of his mind.

副詞句<out of one's mind>は主語のあとに be動詞をつけて使うことができます。

Mr. Butler: He's only trying to get us there as fast as possible.

Mrs. Butler : I'd rather get there late than dead.

I would rather get there late than be dead.

Mr. Butler: Don't worry.

You must be out of your mind to have lent him money.

Peter went out of his mind when he found out that Jean had left him for good.

副詞句<for good>は for ever のことです。

I must be out of my mind to call Yoshiko Toshiko.

Out of the question 問題外

Howard : When are we going away?

Dad: Next Saturday.

Howard : Can we take the gold fish with us?

Dad: That will be out of the question.

この the がないと、out of question で「問題ない No problem 」となってしまいます。

Howard : What am I going to do with them?

Dad: You will have to let them go, I guess.

Looking for him in the dark was out of the question.

Since you still owe me money, lending you more now is out of the question.
