<37>いろいろな否定を含む表現 

君は恋をするには若すぎます。

(253) You are too young to love.

彼はどこにも見つからなかった。

A. He was nowhere to be seen.

「ぼく間違っているかい」「いや、決して」

B. "Am I wrong?" "No, by no means."

おまえはもう赤ん坊ではない。そのくらいのことはできる年だね。

C. You are no longer a baby. You are old enough to do that, aren't you?

(254) Little did I dream that you would get so angry at the word.

<38>語順にポイントのある表現

(259) "You are a hard worker!" "So I am."

私の家族はみな健康で幸福です。

(262) My family are all well and happy.

B. The enemy were seen here and there on top of the hill.

議会は今開会中だ。

C. Parliament is now sitting.

議会は意見が分かれている。

D. Parliament are divided in opinion.

(263) Neither of them was passable.

当時、人々は地球が太陽の周りを回っているということを知らなかった。

(268) In those days people did not know that the earth moves around the sun.

ガリレオは動くのは地球であって、太陽ではないという信念を固く守った。

A. Galileo was firm in his belief that it is the earth that moves, not the sun.

私は非常なわんぱく少年で、父はよく子供ってものはしょうがないものだと言ったものだ。

B. I was an extremely naughty boy and my father used to say that boys will be boys.

私は駅で列車は何時に出るか尋ねた。

C. At the station I asked what time the train starts.

<41>一致に関する表現 その3 

「きみは前にここに来たことがあるか」と彼は私に言った。*彼は私に私が前にそこに行ったことがあるかどうかをたずねた。

(270) He said to me, "Have you been here before?" *He asked me if ( whether ) I had been there before

彼女は「私は東京に住みたくないけれど、どこにも行くところがないの」と言った。

A. She said, "I don't like to live in Tokyo, but I have nowhere to go."

彼女は東京に住みたくないが、行くところがないと言った。

* She said that she didn't like to live in Tokyo, but that she had nowhere to go.

「どんなことがあろうと、決してうそは言ってはいけない」と母は私に言いました。

<42>接続詞に関する表現 

彼と彼の兄弟は両人とも警察のお尋ね者である。

(271) Both he and his brother are wanted by the police.

2街区ほどまっすぐ行きなさい、そうすれば左手にそれが見えましょう。

A. Go straight on two blocks, and you'll see it on your left.

<43>注意すべき前置詞を含む表現
