| absence | 反対語は presence 「出席・欠席」「存在・不在」の対となる。それぞれ形容詞形は absent / present というが、こちらの方が使い勝手がよい。He has been absent for 10 years. と言うのを his absence of 10 years というと何か公文書にあるような雰囲気だ。 |
| accident | 形容詞形は accidental 。まず最初に思い浮かぶのは「事故」だろう。事故というのは、当事者はボオッとしていて、たまたまそのようなときに不思議な偶然が重なるものである。だから「偶然」という意味は大切だ。この意味で副詞句にするには by accident とする。これに対し incident とは「何か悪いこと」だが、別に偶然性はない。さらに incidence というのもあり、これは incident の発生（率）を示す。 |

make a mistake というコロケーションが最もよく見受けられる。受動態も可能。「思い違いなどをして、うっかりした誤り、間違い」と考えられているが、 「害を及ぼす間違い」なら error がよい。だから野球選手がした失敗は、チーム全体にとって有害であるから、error なのである。動詞形も mistake である。形容詞には mistaken があって「（人が）思い違いをしている」などと使う。 |
