(1)Women played a vital part in the conquest and settlement of the West. They often endured hardship and danger with courage and fortitude. They acted as a steadying force in the Western cow towns which were not as romantic as Western movies make out. Liquor, gambling, the dancing girls in the local saloon were about the only entertainment available in the crude little townships. Wives frequently lost their husbands and sons in drunken brawls, in family feuds, in fights with Indians or cattle thieves.

(2)Western states were the first to give women the vote. Between 1869 and the outbreak of World War 1, seventeen states west of the Mississippi gave women the right to vote in state elections for Governors and Representatives. It was not until 1920 that the Federal Government, under pressure by women insisting on their right to vote, followed the states' lead and permitted women to take part in national elections for Congressmen and the President.

(3)Women have made great strides since then in achieving political equality. Recently, American feminists have been working hard to achieve social and economic equality as well as political. Their belief is that, as there is nothing that women cannot do just as well as men, they should be shown the same respect and have the same social rights and the same pay as their male counterparts. Anything less is discrimination and sexism.

(4)Few American girls agree with the extreme feminists who deride marriage and romantic love, but more and more of them are prepared to live with a man outside marriage, often with the intention of buying a home and marrying only when, between them, they have saved enough money. Young couples today share both the household chores and care of the baby.

(5)The older generations, especially those that live in the city suburbs, are bewildered and disturbed by this trend. It is all against the great American tradition of the "home" as the symbol of the unified family.

(1)Maybe when I'm a hundred, I'll get used to having everything I do taken for granted," a young housewife confided to her neighbor. "If Bill would compliment me once in a while, he'd make my life much happier."

(2)Few of us realize how much we need encouragement. Yet we must bask in the warmth of approval now and then or lose our self-confidence.

(3)All of us need to feel admired and needed. But unless we hear words of praise from someone else, how can we know that we are valued friends or co-workers?

(4)Anyone who wants to improve his relationships with others need only show a sympathetic understanding. The way to express this understanding and to give others the feeling of importance and worthiness boils down to this; always look for something in the other person you can admire and praise-and tell him about it.

(5)We each have a mental picture of ourselves, a self-image. To find life reasonably satisfying, that self-image must be one we can live with, one we can like. When we are proud of our self-image, we feel confident and free to be ourselves. We function at our best. When we are ashamed of our self-image, we attempt to hide it rather than express it. We become hostile and hard to get along with.

(6)A miracle happens to the person whose self-esteem has been raised. He suddenly likes other people better. He is kinder and more cooperative with those around him. Praise is the polish that helps keep his self-image bright and sparkling.

(7)What has this to do with your giving praise? A lot. You have the ability to perform that kind of miracle in another person. When you add to his self-esteem, you make him want to like you and to cooperate with you.

(8)In a classic bit of advice, Lord Chesterfield suggested to his son that he follow the example of the Duke de Nivernois: "You will perceive that he makes people pleased with him by making them first pleased with themselves."

(1)To be truly rich, regardless of his fortune or lack of it, a man must live by his own values. If the values he lives by are not personally meaningful, then no amount of money gained can hide the real emptiness of his life.

(2)I have known far too many people who spend their lives trying to be what others want them to be and doing what others expect them to do. They force themselves into patterns of behavior which have been established for people with personalities entirely different from their own. Seeking to conform to those patterns, they dissolve into grotesque, blurred mirror images as they obliterate their individuality to imitate others. Rootless, dissatisfied, they vainly strive to find their own identities within the constricting limits of an existence alien to their natures, instincts and innate desires.

(3)"I wanted to be a writer," says Mr.Smith. "My father refused to hear of it and instead I went to law school and became a lawyer. I make a good living now, but I'm bored and restless..." "I'd like to sell my business and buy a farm somewhere," says Mr.Jones, "but my wife won't let me because she's afraid it would mean a loss of income and status..." "There's nothing I hate more than suburban living," says Mr.White. "I'd much rather have an apartment in the city, but all the other executives in my firm have homes in the suburbs..." "I feel trapped, as though I'm caught up in a pointless rat race," says Mr.Brown. "I really don't like or enjoy my work, but I don't know what else I could do and still make as much money as I'm making now..."

(4)I've heard such statements as these made with ever-increasing frequency in recent years. Essentially, they are expressions of personal discontent- and even defeat - but they also reflect a constantly growing social illness of our time.

(5)The period after the First World War was said to have produced a confused, insecure and disillusioned Lost Generation. There is, tragically enough, ample evidence to indicate that the era after the Second World War has produced a generation which has, in large part, lost its sense of perspective and purpose. It is a generation whose members are ready to substitute dollars-and-cents price tags for scales of lasting values and who meekly surrender their individuality and even their integrity as human beings. An extremely obvious manifestation of this can be found in the social phenomenon of status seeking, which has become so widespread and prevalent that it is now one of the principal motivating forces behind our contemporary social behavior patterns.

従ってmore of them=American girlsとなります。

"Maybe when I'm a hundred, I'll get used to having *1 everything I do taken for granted," a young housewife confided to her neighbor. "If Bill would compliment me once in a while, he'd make my life much happier."

<試訳>

Few of us realize *2 how much we need encouragement. Yet we must bask in the warmth of approval now and then *3 or lose our self-confidence.

(3)このorは動詞baskを含む文とloseを含む文を結びつけていますが、or=if we don't bask...

<試訳>

The way to express this understanding *7 and to give others the feeling of importance and worthiness *8 boils down to this; always look for something *9 in the other person you can admire and praise - *10 and tell him about it.

(7)このandは共にwayを修飾するto expressとto giveとを結びつけています。
(9)look for...

<試訳>

When we are proud of our self-image, *13 we feel confident and free to be ourselves. We function at our best. When we are ashamed of our self-image, we attempt to hide it rather than express it. We become hostile and hard to get along with.

<試訳>

<試訳>

What has this to do with your giving praise? A lot. You have the ability to perform *15 that kind of miracle in another person. When you add to his self-esteem, you make him want to like you and *16 to cooperate with you.

have the ability to perform=can performと考えればよい。
(16)このandは共に他動詞wantの目的語であるto likeとto cooperateとを結んでいます。

<試訳>

In a classic bit of advice, Lord Chesterfield suggested to his son *17 that he follow the example of the Duke de Nivernois: "You will perceive *18 that he makes people pleased with him *19 by making them first pleased with themselves."

<試訳>

To be truly rich, *1 regardless of his fortune or lack of it, *2 a man must live by his own values. If the values he lives by *3 are not personally meaningful, then no amount of money gained *4 can hide the real emptiness of his life.

<試訳>

Rootless, dissatisfied, they vainly strive to find their own identities *12 within the constricting limits *13 of an existence alien to their natures, instincts and innate desires.

(10)Seeking

<試訳>

"I really don't like or enjoy my work, but I don't know what else I could do *17 and still make as much money as I'm making now..."

(17)このandは共に他動詞knowの目的語であるwhat節と(that)I still make...

<試訳>

<試訳>
