<1>主語に関する表現 その1 

(1)「はじめまして」「こちらこそ、どうぞよろしく」

(1) "How do you do?" "How do you do? I'm glad to meet you."

「お元気ですか」「ありがとう、ええとても。で、あなたは」

A. "How are you?" "I'm fine thank you. And you?"

ジョンソンさん、友人の東一郎氏をご紹介します。

B. Mr.Johnson, allow me to introduce to you Ichiro Azuma, a friend of mine.

私は東一郎です。一郎が名で、東が姓です。

C. My name is Ichiro Azuma. Ichiro is my first name, and Azuma my last name.

(2) "Your name and address?"---"Ichiro Azuma, 215, High Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan"

A. "How do you spell your last name?"---"A-z-u-m-a, Azuma".---"Thanks a lot."

急がば回れ。(諺)

(7) Slow and steady wins the race.

歳月人を待たず。(諺)

A. Time and tide wait(s) for no man.

これだけは確かだ、つまり彼には全く野心がなかったということは。

B. This much is certain---that he had no ambition whatever.

バタを付けたパンはおいしい。

C. Bread and butter is nice to eat.

見渡すかぎり、丘また丘でした(丘以外に何もなかった)。

(8) As far as the eye could reach, there was nothing but hills.

私は彼を見送りに東京駅まで行った。

私たちはビールを一杯飲みながらおしゃべりした。

(15) 私は何か食べるものがほしいのです。

I want to have something to eat.

彼はいつもより早く寝たが、寝付かれなかった。

A. He went to bed earlier than usual, but sleep would not come to him.

彼は本を読みながら床に座っていた。

(18) The rain has stopped. The sun is shining brightly.

日本では6月と7月に雨が多い。

A. In Japan it rains a good deal in June and July.

太陽は東から昇り、西に沈みます。

B. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

ごらん!太陽が昇ろうとしている。今昇りつつある。もう昇った。

C. Look! The sun is going to rise. It's rising now. It has already risen.

その少年は熊の頭をぶった。

(19) The boy struck the bear on the head.

彼は私の腕をつかみました。

「私たちは子供の時からよい友だちです」「そうですか」

(20) "We have been good friends since childhood." "Have you?"

「彼は英語を話すことがとても上手です」「そうですか」

A. "He's an excellent speaker of English." "Is he?"

「私は彼女の気持ちがわかります」「そうかい」

B. "I can imagine how she feels." "Can you?"

「2度とそんなことはしないで下さい」「ええ、いたしません」

(21) "Please don't do it again." "No, I won't."

「文学博士号を取るのに彼がどこで勉強したか知らないのですか」「いや、知ってますとも。ミシガン大学ですよ」

A. "Don't you know where he worked for his Ph.D.?""Oh, yes, I do. At the University of Michigan."

「明日の午後お暇ですか、それとも先約がありますか」「約束があるのです」

B. "Are you free tomorrow afternoon , or are you engaged?" "I'm engaged."

「どのくらいお金を取っているのですか」「週給200ドルです」

(22) "How much money do you make?" "I'm paid $200 a week."

(正直は割に合う)正直のこうべに神宿る(諺)

A. Honesty pays.

私は週単位で(週毎に)部屋代を払っています。

B. I pay for my room by the week.

あなたはとてもがんばり屋ですね。

(23) You are a hard worker, aren't you?

彼は英語を書くのがかなりうまいですね。

A. He is a fairly good writer of English, isn't he?

<5>英語独特の表現 その3 

「ディック・ブラウン、おまえは嘘つきだ」「(僕がそうなら)おまえだってそうだ」

(27) "You are a liar, Dick Brown!" "You are another!"

そうじゃない。

A. It's not the case.

またいい天気だ。いつもこの時期には晴天がつづく。

B. It's another fine day. We always have a long spell of fine weather about this time of year.

これまで多くの馬鹿者を見てきたが、ここにもいる。

C. I've seen lots of idiots in my life. Here's another.

「答案を鉛筆で書いていいですか」「うん、よろしい」

(28) "May I write my paper in pencil?" "Yes, you may."

そのメモはインクで書かれていた。

A. The note was written in ink.

彼は伝言を鉛筆で書いた。

B. He took down the message with a pencil.

私はそんな態度は礼儀にかなわないと思う。

(29) I don't think it's good manners to behave like that.

物事はそううまくいかん、と思うね。

A. Things won't go so well, I think.

「彼らは幸せですか」「そうではないと思います」

B. "Are they happy?" "I think not."

汽車に間に合ったかい。

(30) Were you in time for the train?

彼は1度に2段ずつ登った。

A. He took two steps at a time.

私は当分の間、読書する暇がありません。

昔、人々は地球はホット・ケーキのように平らなものだと思っていました。

C. In another times people believed that the earth was flat like a pancake.

「あなたは家が恋しくなりましたか」「ええ、ちょっとね」

(31) "Are you homesick?" "Yes, a little bit."

「退屈しませんか」「いいえ、全然」

A. "Aren't you bored?" "No, not at all."

<6>英語独特の表現 その4 

ひと雨きそうな空模様です。傘をお持ちなさい。

(34) The sky looks threatening. Take an umbrella with you.

いつか、友だちをつれてきてもいいですか。

A. May I bring a friend of mine some day?

水を1ぱい行って持ってきていただけますか。

B. Would you please fetch me a glass of water?

それはどういう意味ですか。

(35) What do you mean?

なんと言われましたか。

A. What did you say?

本気で言ったのではなかった(冗談で言った)のです。

B. I didn't mean what I said.

彼はどんなようすの人だと思いますか。

(36) What do you think he looks like?

彼はどんな格好の人ですか。

A. What does he look like?

明日天気になると思いますか。

B. Do you know what people will say?

注;Do you know what people will say? はそのまま文字通り訳せば、「人々がなんていうか知ってる?」という意味ですが、その返事は Yes, I do. People will say it'll be fine tomorrow. だと思ってください。この表現は、この後ろに隠されている意味を知っている人々の間でのみ通用します(おそらくイギリスなどで)。

なお、この文のポイントは、(36) What do you think he looks like? のように do you think がAの文の前後に”融合”された形とは違い、Do you know + what people will say というふうに、主節と従属節がふつうにつながっているタイプであることを示すために出されています。

私はどうしても、今日この仕事を終えねばなりません。

(37) I must finish this job today by all means.

私は月曜から金曜まで授業に出なければなりません。

A. I have to go to school Monday through Friday.

君が間違っていると言わねばならない。

B. I am bound to say that you are wrong.

あなたはこの国に何をしにやってきたのですか。

(38) What have you come to this country for?

どうして彼は帰宅したのですか。

A. Why did he come home?

あなたは毎日学校にどうして来ますか。

B. How do you come to school every day?

「彼はどうしていますか」「彼は元気です。自分で彼に手紙を書きなさいよ。」

(39) "How is he?" "Oh, he's fine. Why don't you write to him yourself?"

「また、お訪ねしていいですか」「よろしいですとも」

A. "May I call on you again?" "Why not?"

「私は何故という質問は嫌いです」

B. I don't like the questions of whys and wherefores.

おめでとう。きみとメアリーが婚約したということを聞いたよ。彼女はすばらしい奥さんになるだろうよ。

(40) Congratulations! I have been told you and Mary are engaged. She will make an excellent wife.

<7>異なるニュアンスを持つ類似表現英語独特の表現 その1 

私は今朝とても早く起きました。

(41) I got up very early this morning.

彼は素早くドアを開け、私を中に通した。

C. He quickly opened the door and showed me in.

少年時代に私はその池でよく泳いだものです。

(42) As a boy I used to swim in the pond.

私はそんな風に話しかけられるのに慣れていません。

A. I'm not used to being spoken to in that way.
